Description: | The WSDOT Roads layer combines State Highways (24k lines), the Functional Class dataset (county and city arterial and collector roads and streets) and local access roads and streets from 2010 Census data. This data layer provides statewide road coverage that meets many of WSDOT's business need such as cartographic production, analysis, and other planning purposes, without copyright restrictions. This new dataset may eventually eliminate the need for commercially licensed road data products.

Description: | WSDOT is developing reusable, general purpose, server-hosted software services, rather than isolated custom applications, in order to generate software/data solutions to meet functional business needs. This approach results in the creation of a "library" of functional services that can be reused by other applications/systems. This applies to cartographic map services as well as to geoprocessing services and non-spatial services.
3 | Practice: | Environmental GIS Workbench |
Subject Areas: | Environment Environmental Streamlining
State: | Washington | |
Organization: | Washington State Department of Transportation
Contact: | Elizabeth Lanzer
Title: | Environmental Information Program Manager
Email: | lanzere@wsdot.wa.gov
Phone: | 360-705-7476 | |
Description: | Washington State and Washington State DOT (WSDOT) have become national leaders in the development of innovative methods for sharing geographic data about environmental conditions and natural resource management. Within WSDOT, the Environmental section within the agency's GIS Workbench provides a key role in this area. The WSDOT GIS Workbench is a custom built, database-driven internal application that provides customized views of the agency's shared GIS data library for various business purposes, including environmental review and documentation. The Environmental Information Program provides data administration, user training and helpdesk support for the agency's Environmental GIS users. Approximately 400 environmental and natural resource GIS datasets are available through the GIS Workbench. These data are acquired and updated, documentation is updated and posted, and then customized map displays are developed and made available through the GIS Workbench so that the data is ready to use in corridor planning, project scoping, environmental permit applications, and other documentation like biological assessments. The GIS Workbench's environmental section has become a standard operating tool for effective and efficient environmental review. The Environmental Information Program's on-going support to keep the data updated, to incorporate additional data for new requirements, and to update and train end users about the available data has been crucial to the success of the GIS Workbench.

Description: | The Freight Map Application is a browser-based mapping application that focuses on Truck Performance Measure (TPM) Data. The map application helps the Freight Division deliver the Truck Performance data to WSDOT planners and other business areas for analysis. The combination of the TPM data and the basemaps help planners to visualize different freight scenarios.

Description: | The Functional Classification Public Web Map is a site made available by WSDOT for customers who need to know the currently assigned Federal Functional Classification (FFC) of public roads. This site is updated monthly based on the results of maintaining and updating FFC as required by FHWA. This site allows agencies and planning organizations to periodically review their FFC network to ensure that roads are functionally classified correctly.
