Description: | The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) maintains a Geodetic Monument Viewer that contains information on permanent geodetic control marks located in Minnesota or just outside its boundaries. Permanent geodetic control marks are established for the purpose of providing precise horizontal and vertical control positions for the registration of surveying and mapping activities in the local area. Information about the location of an object based on its geodetic location locates that object in a worldwide geographic information system.

Description: | MetroGIS is an innovative, regional geographic information systems initiative serving the seven-county Minneapolis-St. Paul (Minnesota) metropolitan area. It provides a regional forum to promote and facilitate widespread sharing of geospatial data. MetroGIS is a voluntary collaboration of local and regional governments, with partners in state and federal government, academic institutions, nonprofit organizations and businesses. The mission of MetroGIS is to provide an ongoing, stakeholder-governed, metro-wide mechanism through which participants easily and equitably share geographically referenced data that are accurate, current, secure, of common benefit and readily usable. The desired outcomes of MetroGIS include: Improve participant operations, Reduce costs, and Support cross-jurisdictional decision making. MetroGIS offers a Datafinder, which is the mechanism for sharing GIS data among users in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. The DataFinder provides metadata describing GIS data sets and access to download several GIS data sets.

Description: | The Statewide Parcel Data Inventory Research Project is to inform those interested in the status of digital parcel data development by local government. The survey canvassed Minnesota's counties, cities and Indian Reservations that archive, create, and maintain parcel data. The Minnesota Department of Transportation needs data about parcel ownership for right-of-way acquisition and land management purposes. The process of identifying land ownership within a right-of-way is often difficult and labor intensive, because many counties maintain records of ownership in systems that are not spatially oriented or linked to computer databases. The goal of the project was to reduce redundant effort between agencies in parcel data development while fostering cooperation between Mn/DOT and others leading to improved working relationships and increased knowledge exchange. An additional outcome expected is the potential for increased uniformity of data, standardized information, improved methods of data access and automated data exchange, while increasing opportunity for sharing of best practices. The Statewide Parcel Map Inventory website offers parcel maps, downloadable data, and project contacts.
