The 33rd webcast in a quarterly series of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) webcasts was presented by Chris Glantz, Lead Remote Sensing Surveyor with the Geometronics Unit, Oregon Department of Transportation. Mr. Glantz' presentation provided an explanation of how Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanning technology provides a smarter, safer, and more efficient means of surveying geospatial information of transportation infrastructure and gave examples of how ODOT has used LiDAR data.

Spring 2017 Newsletter
Now Available
The latest edition of the quarterly newsletter is now available here. It features an interview with Jason Richins, Utah DOT's Research Project Manager. The FHWA GIS in Transportation Program asked Mr. Richins about one of their GIS initiatives: the LiDAR-based Maintenance Feature Inventory.

GIS Webcast: Data-Exchange Agreements to Meet Transportation Needs: How LA Metro Leverages Waze Data to Manage Traffic

A summary of a recent GIS in Transportation webcast is now available here. The 32nd webcast in a quarterly series of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) webcasts was presented by Mark Sarmiento of FHWA and Mr. Kali Fogel, Regional Integration of Intelligent Transportation Systems (RITTS) Program Manager at Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Los Angeles, CA.
Mr. Fogel’s presentation provided an overview of RIITS' objective to develop, integrate, store, exchange, manage, host, operate, maintain, and expand the collection, distribution, and use of transportation related data as well as the Connected Citizen Program through Waze, a free data exchange program that allows user to collect real-time traffic and road information. Mr. Fogel presented a detailed slideshow on RIITS and the integration and potential uses of the Connected Citizens Program.

GIS Webcast: URISA GIS Capability Maturity Model

A summary of a recent GIS in Transportation webcast is now available here. The 31st webcast in a quarterly series of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) webcasts was presented by Mark Sarmiento of FHWA and Mr. Allen Ibaugh, CEO of Data Transfer Solutions (DTS) and member of Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA). Mr. Ibaugh’s presentation provided an overview of what a GIS CMM is and how GIS has grown to become a ubiquitous tool across many disciplines such as government, private industry, agriculture, and academia. The URISA GIS CMM tool is a specific CMM for GIS users primarily at the municipality level, but has been adopted at the MPO and State DOT levels. URISA’s GIS CMM seeks to evaluate and visualize the operational effectiveness on an agency’s GIS programs and provide a means for how an organization can optimize their GIS infrastructure and return on investment.
