The GIS/Automated Mapping section champions the use of GIS throughout the Department, represents the interests of DOT at the State level and develops and maintains the state's geographically referenced road network. GIS Staff accesses spatial data to develop maps used throughout the Department to assist in the day to day decision-making processes.
The system maps features such as roadway age, surface type, surface condition, pavement distress data, roadbed layer information, accident data, average daily traffic, maintenance schedules, and improvement recommendations. |

Description: | For more than 10 years, the SDDOT and South Dakota Planning Districts (Districts)have been using DOS-based customized GPS software to collect and maintain data on more than 83,000 miles of roadway alignments and their attributes. The GPS data has been converted to Arcinfo coverages through several custom SMLs and AMLs (Simple Marco Language and Advanced Macro Language).
