1 Practice: SmartWay Traveler Information System
Subject Areas: Maintenance
Operations
State: Tennessee
Organization: Tennessee Department of Transportation

Email: Kim.McDonough@state.tn.us
Phone: (615) 741-4037
Description: SmartWay is the public interface for TDOT's Intelligent Transportation System. It includes 511 and several browser-based applications that provide incident, weather, and construction information to travelers to allow them to make informed decisions to avoid congestion and safety hazards such as snow, ice, flooding, and crashes. Incidents and construction are entered by TDOT employees or Highway Patrol Dispatchers based on defined street segments. This information is then translated to a coordinate location for display on the web map. For 511, a text file is automatically generated and published to an RSS feed. This data is then consumed by our 511 vendor who then creates the appropriate voice files that describe the incident over the phone to anyone calling 511 in Tennessee. On the SmartWay maps website, the same information conveyed by 511 is displayed on an interactive map display that utilizes Google Maps as its background. In addition to 511 incidents and construction, the online map also provides Google's congestion data, TDOT traffic cameras and dynamic message signs. A streamlined listing of 511 data is provided as a mobile app for Smart phones that does not require map navigation by a driver. This information is also provided on Twitter. All information displayed on the web map is available free of charge as RSS and GeoRSS files. The link to the mobile application is: https://smartway.tn.gov/.

2 Practice: Statewide Environmental Management System (SEMS)
Subject Areas: Environment
Environmental Streamlining
State: Tennessee
Organization: Tennessee DOT
Contact: Lori Kirby
Email: Lori.A.Kirby@tn.gov
Phone: 615-253-2473
Description: SEMS is a workflow-driven GIS-based web application intended to facilitate collaboration and communication among TDOT and its partners throughout the planning, project development, and environmental permitting of transportation projects. The SEMS application, which is currently under development, includes a GIS-based database of environmental data, GIS analysis tools, a workflow engine to drive review and decisionmaking activities, and a project repository and web-based collaboration environment to allow the review of data and documents. By creating a centralized location to access GIS data and project specific information, SEMS will eliminate the need to store redundant information in multiple locations and improve information sharing and collaboration between transportation and resource agencies.

3 Practice: Tennessee Roadway Information Management System (TRIMS)
Subject Areas: Asset Management
Environment
Maintenance
Operations
Planning
State: Tennessee
Organization: Tennessee Department of Transportation
Contact: Kim McDonough
Email: Kim.McDonough@state.tn.us
Phone: (615) 741-4037
Description: The Tennessee Roadway Information Management System (TRIMS), a PowerBuilder application that accesses the Tennessee Department of Transportation's (TDOT) Oracle database, enables TDOT to capture, maintain, and view critical roadway data, including traffic, bridges, crashes, railroad grade crossings, and pavement conditions. TRIMS is principally a reporting tool with about ten percent of TDOT staff using the GIS functionality. TRIMS also provides an integrated interface to TDOT's photologs, which are digital roadway photographs taken of all interstates and state routes.

The GIS component of TRIMS provides a query and view interface where roadway data is displayed in a graphical format on a Tennessee state map. From the map, users are able to identify key features and view pertinent data, photologs, and documents to which the feature is associated. Additional data in TRIMS as well as other GIS applications is received from counterpart state agencies and the federal government. Aside from data acquired with stated restrictions (e.g., endangered species), all geospatial data is available to those within TDOT and to others by request.
