3 Practice: Alaska Habitat Connectivity GIS Database and Mapping
Subject Areas: Environment
Planning
State: Alaska
Organization: Federal Highway Administration AK Division
Contact: Tim Haugh
Title: ROW Environmental Specialist
Email: Tim.Haugh@fhwa.dot.gov
Phone: 907-586-7430
Description: Alaska DOT&PF is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Park Service, and Alaska Railroad Corporation to develop a GIS habitat database that can be used to map wildlife habitat. This database and habitat mapping will help assess the potential effects of transportation projects on habitat connectivity so that mitigation can be planned early in the process. Specifically, the application will develop a habitat connectivity GIS database model for a portion of the Parks Highway corridor between Wasilla and Fairbanks. The results of this effort will be used to develop habitat connectivity maps for the other major highways in Alaska (i.e. Alaska Highway, Glenn Highway, Richardson Highway, and Seward Highway).

Description: The Digital Imaging Data Collection is a photolog that is web-accessible to internal DOT&PF users. This photolog displays spatially accurate and linear-referenced images of selected feature locations and attributes along sections of road network in Alaska.

From these images, the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities' (AK DOT&PF) GIS/Mapping section can source network updates and extract feature information for integration into the enterprise geospatial database. While still in its early stages, this project has offered encouraging results to date: user response has been positive and use of the photolog has increased.
