Description: | The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) combined innovative Geographic Information System (GIS) technology with early, proactive coordination with state and Federal resource agencies, the public, and Native American tribes to expedite the NEPA project development process for the I-69 Connector. The development of a project specific GIS was the key element in streamlining the transportation decisionmaking and permitting process for this project. The GIS served as an effective tool for managing environmental data for the over 600 square mile project area in a cost and time efficient manner. Early involvement with state and Federal resource agencies and the public helped identify key environmental and community issues before alternatives were developed, allowing AHTD to limit the number and location of project alternatives to areas that avoided and minimized involvement with wetlands, farmland soils, archeological resources, etc. | |
