Description: The San Juan Metropolitan Area of Puerto Rico, under the Transportation Equity Act (TEA 21), requires that all metropolitan areas under US territory develop Long Range Transportation Plans (LRTP) to obtain Federal funding for transportation improvements. The GIS office from the Puerto Rico Highway and Transportation Authority (PRHTA), together with the Department of Transportation and Public Works' Strategic Planning Office, have developed a joint project to integrate GIS technology in the LRTP process.

The GIS, which assists in the analysis and evaluation of future transportation needs and patterns, was used to capture, digitize, rectify, analyze and finally produce accurate transportation network maps. The maps incorporate the integration and synergy of the three major transportation systems in Puerto Rico: 1) Urban Train; 2) Metropolitan Bus Authority; and 3) Public Cars Transportation. The official Network Transportation Plans from all the sub regions that compose the San Juan Metro Area are also included.

GPS technology, satellite imagery, aerial photography and digital elevation models (DEM) were used to analyze geographic and demographic patterns through corridors. This analysis allowed planners to establish accurate network maps in order to more effectively satisfy the travel demands of the public.
