On January 19, 2011, FHWA will present its 8th webcast in a quarterly series of webcasts highlighting applications of geospatial technologies in transportation.
The webcast speakers are Stuart Harlan, Senior Information Systems Technologist, and Charles (Matt) Hiebert, Web Manager, both of the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT).
The webcast will focus on MoDOT's Traveler Information Map, an interactive, publically accessible map showing road conditions, work zones, incidents, and other travel information for Missouri. The webcast will cover how MoDOT developed the application, challenges and lessons learned, and the application's GIS architecture and operation.

GIS Practice of the Week
California Transportation Investment System (CTIS)
CTIS uses a GIS to display the transportation system along with future projects. It shows where transportation investment is currently underway (programmed) and where it will be (planned) over the next 20 years.
The dataset includes highway, local, rail, airport, bicycle, pedestrian, transit, and Proposition 1B projects at both the State and regional levels. Base layer and existing transportation system datasets are also provided.
MetroGIS is an award-winning, regional GIS initiative serving the seven-county Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. It provides a regional forum to promote and facilitate widespread sharing of geospatial data. MetroGIS is a voluntary collaboration of local and regional governments, with partners in state and Federal government, academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, and businesses.
Two web-based, resource search tools currently exist that were developed to address MetroGIS stakeholder needs: DataFinder and GeoServices Finder. These resources assist individuals to locate existing geospatial data, applications and web services, and application and web service components important to addressing their respective business needs.
